Spirit, body, emotion. Three lights illuminate your essence

“Trinity” embodies the harmony of body, mind, and soul through the act of blowing the conch horn (body), releasing ego (mind), and depicting the inner self (soul). The incorporation of gold leaf signifies “Satori,” a state of complete enlightenment in Zen Buddhism. This artwork aims to evoke inner peace within viewers, prompting contemplation on universal concepts.
My proposed work, “Trinity” (2023), delves into the concept of harmony between body, mind, and soul, drawing inspiration from diverse religious and philosophical traditions. As an artist working with Shugendo as a foundation, it’s important to understand this religion, which flourished in Japan south of Honshu and north of Kyushu. Shugendo practitioners, also known as Shugenja or Yamabushi, have worshipped mountains as deities or their embodiments since ancient times, engaging in ascetic practices within them. Their religion incorporated elements of Buddhism and Shinto, leading to various connections with shrines and Buddhist temples. Notable schools include the Honzan school centered around Shogoin of the Tendai sect and the Tozan school centered around Sanboin of Daigoji Temple of the Shingon sect. Dewa Sanzan in Yamagata Prefecture also enshrines the Gassan Shrine, Dewa Shrine, and Yudono-san Shrine.
While not widely known by modern Japanese, Shugendo was a form of common knowledge before the Edo period. Its decline is largely attributed to the Meiji government’s separation of Shinto and Buddhism, making the syncretic nature of Shugendo difficult to maintain. Nevertheless, it undeniably occupies a significant part of Japan’s spiritual and religious history, heavily influencing Buddhist art. This context enriches the understanding of “Trinity,” which utilizes abstract forms and the interplay of light to create a visual space conducive to introspection and inner peace. Inspired by the resonance of the conch horn in Shugendo, “Trinity” seeks to connect the viewer’s inner world with their external reality, prompting a deeper understanding of personal truths. The use of acrylic on canvas allows for a vibrant and enduring representation of these profound themes. The opportunity to develop this project in Germany, a nation with a profound artistic and philosophical heritage, particularly in exploring themes of spirituality and the human condition, offers a unique and invaluable context for cross-cultural dialogue and artistic growth. In January 2025, at the Art Fair Hirono, I created a large cloth (toromatto material) installation as a sample meditation area, demonstrating the potential of my work to foster calm and reflection.
精神、肉体、感情。三つの光が照らす、あなたの本質
「三位一体」は、法螺貝を吹き、エゴを捨て、内面を描くことで、それぞれ身体、精神、魂の調和を表します。金箔を使用し、それは禅でいう完全な悟りの状態を表します。観た人は内なる平和を呼び起こし、普遍的な概念についての熟考を促します。
私の提案する作品「三位一体」（2023年、130 × 89 cm、アクリル・キャンバス）は、身体、精神、魂の調和という概念を探求し、多様な宗教的および哲学的伝統からインスピレーションを得ています。修験道をベースに作品制作をしているアーティストとして、日本列島の本州島以南、九州島以北で成立発展した宗教である修験道への理解は重要です。山そのものを神（またはその依代）として崇拝しつつ、山の中で修行をする人々（修験者とか山伏と呼びます）が古代から本州島や九州島にいましたが、彼らの宗教が仏教や神道の要素も取り込んでいったため、神社や仏教寺院で修験道と結びついているところも色々あります。たとえば天台宗系の聖護院を中心とした本山派、真言宗系の醍醐寺三宝院を中心とした当山派というのがありましたし、山形県の出羽三山は月山神社、出羽神社、湯殿山神社がそれぞれ鎮座しています。
今でこそ日本人もあまり詳しくない修験道ですが、江戸時代以前はある種の常識としてあった宗教です。それがなくなってしまったのは明治政府が神道と仏教を分離するよう通知を出して、神仏習合の宗教になっていた修験道がやりづらくなってしまったからというのが大きいですね。とはいえ、日本列島の精神史・宗教史の大きな部分を占めるものには間違いありませんし、仏教美術にも大きな影響を与えてきたわけですから、「三位一体」を理解する上でこの背景は重要です。作品は、抽象的な形と光の相互作用を利用して、内省と内なる平和の育成に適した視覚空間を作り出しています。修験道の法螺貝の響きに触発された「三位一体」は、鑑賞者の内なる世界と彼らの外的現実を結びつけ、個人的な真実についてのより深い理解を促します。アクリル絵具をキャンバスに使用することで、これらの深遠なテーマを鮮やかで永続的に表現しています。芸術と哲学、特に精神性と人間の状況の探求において豊かな歴史と伝統を持つドイツでこのプロジェクトを展開する機会は、異文化間の対話と芸術的成長のためのユニークで貴重な背景を提供します。2025年1月のアートフェア広野町では、サンプルとして大きな布（トロマット素材）で瞑想空間を作成しました。
