Art to promote friendship between Islam and Japan

The Moon is the work that makes me feel connected with the world. The first person who bought my artwork was a female diplomat from Dubai. She invited me to the Arab Week 2015 Art Exhibition, an exhibition dedicated to Arab-Japanese artistic friendship. First, she gave me an assignment, asking me to draw a woman in an Abaya (a loose overgarment worn by some women in parts of the Muslim world), but in my opinion, just drawing a woman in an Abaya wouldn’t make it a work of art. I believe that the solar system is built upon a duality of opposites, so if I were to depict a woman in an Abaya, I would have her hold a Hanjar, a man’s sword, in her right hand, so that the male and female energies would be in harmony. Then I looked for common motifs between Japan and the Arab world. It was the Moon. In Japan, the moon is represented in the Taketori Monogatari, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. In Islam, the moon is an important motif that signals the start of Ramadan. I painted a picture of a woman in an Abaya with the moon in the background. She is holding a sword in her hand.
The Arab Week 2015 Art Exhibition gathered people from Arab countries, and participants were wearing various national costumes. I interacted with people of all ages and enjoyed discovering cultural differences.
The guest of honor, Her Imperial Highness Princess Hisako of Takamado, praised the lapis lazuli color of the Abaya on my painting, calling it “a harmoniously beautiful blue. This painting received the Japan-Arab Friendship Appreciation Award from the Omani/Palestinian Ambassador of the host country. The creation of the Moon has convinced me that I am connected with the World.
～イスラムと日本における友好絵画～
新井文月は、2015年にArab Week 2015美術展に参加しました。日本を代表するアーティストの中では最年少であり、この中で新井は「月」というタイトルを展示しました。日本の文様とアバヤを纏った女性、日本とイスラムにとって親和性のあるモチーフを配置することで、お互いの関係性に歩み寄る表現となっています。
当初、アバヤを着た女性を描いてほしいとの依頼でしたが、新井はこの太陽系自体が二律背反で成り立つと考えているので、女性を描くならば、右手には男性の剣ハンジャール（アラブ人の男性が成人になると帯刀する剣）を持たせて調和をとろうと考えました。それから日本とアラブの間で中立的なモチーフを探しました。それは月です。月は日本最古の物語とされる竹取物語に表されるモチーフであり、アラブではラマダンの時期を知るための重要な役割を担っています。絵画の背景は川島文様の「宝尽くし」で、これは日本の伝統文様として親しまれており、吉祥・招福の意味を持ちます。着物ではよく使用され、豪華で品格ある袋帯や結婚式、茶会の席などでもよく見かけられる文様です。この作品に関して、憲仁親王妃久子高円宮妃殿下から「この上ない美しいブルー」とアバヤのラピスラズリ色について賞賛され、新井文月は主催国のオマーン／パレスチナ大使からは芸術文化親交賞を受けました。
