Art to promote friendship between Islam and Japan
In April 2015, I had a show at Arab Week 2015 Art Exhibition held at the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman. I made a painting under the title “Moon” for this occasion. The painting shows the mutual friendship by arranging the traditional Japanese pattern and a woman wearing abaya: the motifs having an affinity between Japan and Islam.

The moon is familiar with an early Japanese folktale “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter” tells that a woman goes back to the moon due to her sin and punishment. The moon also plays an important role in a Muslim culture where the lunar solar calendar is used and according to which the fasting month Ramadan starts.

In the painting, a dagger called khanjar is depicted. This is a symbol of a man’s origin, his manhood and courage since it is given to a boy who reaches puberty in the Sultanate of Oman, the sponsored country.

Takara-zukushi (a collection of figures symbolical of health, worth, comfort, sweetness, luxury, etc.) decorates the background. The texture is frequently used in Kimono’s obi (sash), and this obi in the painting is made from Kawashima obi, the notable Kimono pattern. This traditional Japanese pattern is popular as it indicates auspiciousness and invitation to happiness. Those flamboyant and prestigious obis are seen at celebrating occasions such as weddings and tea ceremonies.

This artwork was praised by Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado by saying “Extremely beautiful color”. Lastly, I would like to modestly express my gratitude for receiving Certificate of Appreciation from the Ambassador of the State of Palestine and the Ambassador of Sultanate of Oman.

～イスラムと日本における友好絵画～

新井文月は、2015年にArab Week 2015美術展に参加しました。日本を代表するアーティストの中では最年少であり、この中で新井は「月」というタイトルを展示しました。

日本の文様とアバヤを纏った女性、日本とイスラムにとって親和性のあるモチーフを配置することで、お互いの関係性に歩み寄る表現となっています。

月というモチーフは、日本において十五夜など月を愛でる行事もあり馴染み深く、また古来より『竹取物語』などでは女性が罪と罰によって月に帰る伝承もああります。またイスラム教徒においては今も太陰暦を使用しており、ラマダンの時期を知らせるなど月は重要な役割を担います。

女性はハンジャルと呼ばれる短剣が持っておりますが、これはオマーン・スルタン国などの国では成人儀礼において所持する剣であり、男性の象徴とされています。

絵画の背景は川島文様の「宝尽くし」で、これは日本の伝統文様として親しまれており、吉祥・招福の意味を持ちます。着物ではよく使用され、豪華で品格ある袋帯や結婚式、茶会の席などでもよく見かけられる文様です。

この作品に関して、憲仁親王妃久子高円宮妃殿下から「この上ない美しいブルー」とアバヤのラピスラズリ色について賞賛され、新井文月は主催国のオマーン／パレスチナ大使からは芸術文化親交賞を受けました。
